Pyrmont
Pyrmont is situated 2kms south west of Sydney center, it is Australia's most densely populated suburb. Pyrmont was one a vital part of Sydneys industrial waterfront. Made up of wharves, ship yards, factories and stores. When the companies moved out the area declined as people also more out.
History
The land was granted to Thomas Jones in 1795 which he then sold for 10 pounds in 1796 to Obadiah Ikin. He then sold it to Captain John Macarthur for a gallon of rum in 1799. Pyrmont was a site of quarries from early stage. Charles Saunders was the owner of the Quarryman's Arms Hotel and became the biggest quarrymaster from 1853. This work was continued by his son and grandson until 1931. The first church built in the area was a Presbyterian Church in 1864. In 1858 the first bridge was opened and names the Pyrmont Bridge.
Pyrmont was a slum in the 19th century because of serious decay after world war 2 when the businesses closed down and people moved to other suburbs. Then 1963 the powerhouse also closed and left to ruin.
In the 1990 the government started a Better Cities program to renew areas that had fallen into decay. Factories were replaced with low and high rise residential developments. Some of the buildings like the Cooperage and Tablet House were hertiage listed and restored. Pyrmont has now become the home of many business like radio and television stations.
